Housing for our Heroes.

On Monday we announced an important new initiative to help provide housing opportunities for the veterans of our community.

The sad but true fact is that we have identified approximately 40 veterans who are in various stages of homelessness, and returning veterans from the Iraq War have the highest rates of homelessness of any returning veterans from any conflict.

Danbury's initiative will focus on a phased approach that will first dedicate resources in our homeless shelter, than move to transitional housing, and finally towards home ownership or permanent housing. Our goal will be to create 30 units of housing by 2011. We are marshaling the resources of the VA, HUD, the Danbury Housing Authority, and our Health, Housing and Welfare Departments along with the Non-Profit Housing Development Corp., to rehabilitate existing housing stock for our veterans.

I want to thanks everybody who has worked on this project, we are excited to get it moving. After all, we owe this to our veterans...

All The Best,
MayorMark
